RAS Completions have had the pleasure of restoring the paint work on the Russian MK IX Supermarine Spitfire PT879. She is the first Spitfire returning from Russia however, required a full rebuild after crashing in a dogfight in Spring 1945, a large number of her original parts were used during the restoration.
In Summer 2020, our paint team had the challenge of ensuring the presentation and colour scheme that was applied to the aircraft was as accurate as it would have been back in 1944. The aircraft arrived with the RAF fuselage roundels and camouflage scheme. Our team sanded back the roundels and re-applied the camouflage scheme, we then applied Russian markings over the top of the RAF roundels and painted in the Russian colour scheme. Russian markings and paint were applied to the rudder section of the aircraft as well as painting the wings in camouflage and adding Russian markings on the top and bottom. Finally, all the original stencils PT879 were applied over the entire aircraft.
